Sunrise, Kauai
Photograph by Matt Wade, My Shot
This scene looks peaceful enough, but it was actually one of the most treacherous and turbulent landscape shots I've taken. The pre-dawn ocean was violently churning and downpours of rain were sporadic. I was literally in the water to get this shot and my camera almost got washed away a couple of times. I used a neutral density filter over the lens to slow the waves to get a fog effect.

Bluestripe Snappers and Milletseed Butterfly Fish, Oahu
Photograph by Brandi Mueller, My Shot
I was diving a wreck off Oahu, Hawaii, at about 100 feet and my camera was having technical difficulties. I stopped swimming to try to fix it and these bluestripe snappers and milletseed butterfly fish crowded around me. By the time I got my camera to work again I couldn't even see the wreck, just the fish. It was amazing to have them so close.

Lava Flow, Big Island
Photograph by Alain Barbezat, My Shot
On a holiday trip to Hawaii this July my wife and I decided to treat ourselves with a helicopter tour of the Big Island. We flew over the lava flowing into the sea, and the moment I saw it I knew I had to come back at night to capture the majesty of it. I went back the next day, driving four hours to get there and a bit of hiking as well. By 9 p.m. it was time to go back to our hotel, which was still a four-hour trip back. I can still see and hear it roar in my head, the unbelievable beauty of nature.

Lighthouse, Big Island

While exploring the Big Island in Hawaii, we made our way up a little dirt road that seemed to go nowhere. After getting out and climbing over an old metal gate we weaved our way closer to the sound of the ocean. What a beautiful sight we stumbled upon ... breathtaking.

Heavy Clouds, Maui
Photograph by Wassim Diab, My Shot
I captured this while on a boat sailing around the west coast of Maui, Hawaii. Heavy clouds were casting large areas of shadow on the mountains. At sunset, the horizontal sunlight enhanced the giant clouds. I hand-held my Nikon D300s, did my best to avoid shakes, and had a fast sequence of three exposures at 1 EV difference (HDR image), trying to capture a better dynamic range of that marvelous scene. I used Photoshop CS4 as a digital darkroom to adjust the white balance and the contrast.

Mauna Kea Observatories, Big Island
Photograph by Chris Baughman, My Shot
On my honeymoon in August 2010, I had the opportunity to take a tour to the top of the world's largest volcano, Mauna Kea. Sunset tours are common here, and you get to take pictures alongside the observatories that peer into the depths of space. In the foreground with the tourists is the Gemini Telescope, and in the background is the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The summit here is roughly 14,300 feet.

Silver Sword Bloom, Maui
Photograph by Guy Hamilton, My Shot
I finally witnessed, and was able to capture, this image of the rare silver sword bloom, after three years of trekking to Haleakala National Park on Maui. This amazing plant only grows at above 9,000 feet elevation and "only" on the island of Maui. It lives for 50 years, blooms only once in this spectacular display, then dies. I discovered this bloom one afternoon and with special permission from the park service, I spent the next three nights with this natural wonder.

Na Pali Coast, Kauai
Photograph by Andre Salvador, My Shot
On a boat cruising along the Na Pali Coast is the only way I can get this close to the sharp ridges and deep gorges of the Na Pali Mountains. This was taken at sunset with a pristine, white-sand beach separating the sea and the sharp-edged mountain of the Na Pali Coast.

Surfer and Sea Turtle
Photograph by Lisa Marsh, My Shot
I've never seen another shot of a green sea turtle (called honu in Hawaii) surfacing at the exact same time that a surfer is wiping out and the surfboard is at maximum height. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I downloaded my memory card and scanned through the shots.

Waves, Kauai
Photograph by Lynette Hargreave, My Shot
We were taking pictures of the sunset from Ke'e Beach on the north coast of Kauai, Hawaii, in January 2011. I was grumbling about these adventurers who were not avoidable in any shot, when I decided to make them the focus of the picture along with the pounding surf.
